Pediatrics

Pediatrics is one of the oldest specialties within Chinese medicine and dates to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Chinese doctors recognized the differences between children and adults in diagnosis and treatment and skillfully adapted their methods to the treatment of children.  There is so much to offer in this field for children. In the last 30 years, the many side effects and shortcomings of modern Western medicine have gained more attention. In particular, the overuse of antibiotics in children has led to serious health problems, including the epidemic of pediatric ear infections, antibiotics’ suspected role in the development of allergies, and the development of new strains of infectious bacteria which are resistant to antibiotic treatment.

What Childhood illness can Chinese medicine treat?

  1. Asthma
  2. Ear infections
  3. Eczema
  4. Bronchitis
  5. Cold/Flu
  6. Colic
  7. Constipation
  1. Chronic diarrhea
  2. ADHD
  3. Fever
  4. Insomnia
  5. Teething
  6. Developmental disorders
  7. Chronic sinusitis
  8. Chronic urinary problems

Needling Techniques
Conventional acupuncture needling is not normally used.  Instead the acupuncture channels and points are massaged and stimulated using special Japanese tools called Shonishin.  These tools are rubbed or tapped along the channels and have very strong therapeutic effect, without penetrating the skin.  It is very comfortable to anxious children and parents!

What happens during a session?
Each session last 30-45 minutes. After a discussion of symptoms and medical history, the child will be examined using physical observation, lymph analysis, skin texture and abdominal palpation and then Shonishin will be applied.
